4 Mangaldan employees suspected of payroll anomaly

MANGALDAN—Four employees of the local government here are under probe by the Commission on Audit (COA) for allegedly padding the payroll for several months now.

According to Mayor Herminio Romero, he sought the COA investigation, which started Monday, after an initial internal probe by his office indicated that “there is some truth to the allegation”.

Romero said he learned of the suspected padding last March 31 through a tip-off from an employee, after which he immediately called a meeting with some department heads of the municipal government.

Among those suspected to be involved in the anomaly, which allegedly started in July 2011, come from the Accounting, Treasury and Personnel departments.

“I want the COA, a mandated agency, to do the formal probe to make it impartial,” the mayor said.

The COA investigation seeks to establish not just the guilty parties but how much funds were involved and exactly when the payroll padding began.

“We will wait for the final COA report and recommendation and it would be better if it (recommendation) would come out very soon,” said Romero, vowing that he will not protect any of those found guilty and let justice take its due course.

The mayor also appealed to those under investigation to voluntarily take a leave of absence.—Eva Visperas
