LINGAYEN – The annual Pista’y Dayat (Sea Festival), a summer event that sends thousands of Pangasinenses and visitors to the beaches in the province, will showcase the province’s arts and culture.

Governor Victor Agbayani said the provincial government will “make room for the arts and culture in the homes of Pangasinenses.”

He said the provincial government has spent much of its resources in the past on infrastructure, tourism, livelihood and jobs, nutrition but very little on arts and culture.

Agbayani said that art sector must be actively promoted since it cannot thrive naturally without strong support from the community, from the government and the private sector.

Since the festival started on April 10 that will culminate on May 1, four days have been devoted to the Pangasinan Artists Group for their art exhibit on April 24, on-the-spot painting demonstration (portrait and figurative) on April 27, on-the-spot painting demonstration (landscape and still life) on April 29, and on-the-spot painting demonstration (interaction/contemporary) on April 30, all at the Capitol Grounds here.

Other activities: El Puerto Marina ATV Sand Dune Race on April 24 and 25, SMB battle of the Bands Eliminations on April 26 to 30, Jollibee Event on April 26, drum and lyre competition on April 27, Cookfest, Gov. Agbayani Cup Kid Boxing Eliminations and Chorale Competition on April 28, first Pistay Dayat Swimming Competition and Pangasinan’s Indigenous Games on April 29, sand sculpting on April 30, kite flying contest and Battle of the Bands championship on May 1.

On April 30, the Limgas na Dayat (Maiden of the Sea) will be selected and a thanksgiving Mass and parade of Pangasinan Festivals will be staged on May1.

Lawyer Virgilio Solis, this year’s executive committee chairman, said  that from its simple beginning in the 70s as a thanksgiving celebration of fisherfolk for God’s blessings, Pista’y Dayat has become an annual  tradition and a major tourism   event  its festivities showcasing the best of  Pangasinan  culture, arts and products through public and private support.– EVA
