PUNCH, one of RP’s best newspapers

The country’s most outstanding regional newspapers will again take the center stage tomorrow, April 24. And, the SUNDAY PUNCH has again been named as one of six community newspapers (weekly category) in the country that was nominated to the Philippine Press Institute Annual Community Press Awards.

Celebrating ten years of excellence in community journalism, the prestigious awards program honors community newspapers that have shown exemplary work in editing, science and environmental reporting, business and economic reporting, photojournalism and editorial.

The regional winners from both dailies and weeklies which are now considered finalists, selected from among the 87 member-newspapers of the Institute in the regions whose past issues have been evaluated by the screening committee, will vie for the five major awards. The other finalists in the weekly category are Baguio Midland Courier (Baguio City), Bandillo ng Palawan (PuertoPrincesa City), Mabuhay (Bulacan), Mindanao Bulletin (Gen. Santos City), and Mirror Bulletin (Davao City).

The finalists in the daily category are: (Daily) Cebu Daily News (Cebu City), Sun.Star Davao (Davao City) and Kapawa News (Bacolod City).

The winners will be known during the Institute’s 10th National Press Forum and Membership Meeting. The other major awards program is the PPI-UNICEF Child-Friendly Newspaper and Journalist Awards, now on its fifth year.

The national board of judges which is composed of experts from the academe, business sector and print industry select the national winners. Each national winner will receive P15,000 pesos and a trophy.

This year’s board of judges is composed of the following: Anne Lourdes C. Lopez (academe/communication education), former DENR secretary Elisea G. Gozun(environment), Chito B. Salazar (business), Linda Bolido (journalism), and Ronaldo A. Romero as chairperson (PPI trustee and editor-in-chief of  Business World).

This year’s National Press Forum which gathers publishers and editors of  member-newspapers nationwide, will discuss pressing industry concerns. Among the topics are press freedom, right of reply, guidelines in reporting juvenile issues, and population management.

This is being organized with support from Malaya, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Journal Group, The Philippine Star, Manila Standard Today, BusinessWorld, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation (TCCEC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Philippine Legislators’  Committee on Population and Development Foundation, Inc. (PLCPD), Pfizer, Inc. and Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE).
