Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said the founding day of the province, known as “Agew na Pangasinan”, is a day for renewing the commitment of every Pangasinense in the promotion and preservation of the culture and heritage of the province.
‘Agew na Pangasinan’ is officially on April 5, but the events have been moved to April 11 in consideration of this April 5 falling on Maundy Thursday this year.
Baraan said three activities and programs have been lined up this year in a bid to boost and preserve Pangasinan’s culture and heritage.
One is the launching of a new Pangasinan History book based on the research work undertaken by the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission headed by Atty. Gonzalo Duque, president of Lyceum Northwestern University and PUNCH columnist.
It was also Duque who earlier spearheaded a special commission that conducted a comprehensive research that finally determined the day, month and year when Pangasinan was founded in the name of the Spanish crown, which was April 5, 1580.
Baraan said the new history book, a collaborative work of academicians, historians and researchers, will provide more complete, accurate and clearer vision of the history of the province since its founding.
Second event is the launching of the Pangasinan language orthography, the first province in the Philippines to do so with its local language, which will provide the usual and correct usage of the Pangasinan language, including pronunciation.
Also on language preservation, this year marks the launching of the first literally award in Pangasinan, pegged as the local equivalent of the national Palanca award.
This literally award will give honors to outstanding literary works – including essays, poetry, short story, novels and songs – of Pangasinenses, written in the Pangasinan language.
Meanwhile, for this year’s ASNA awards, the recipients were chosen by representatives of the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission, Pangasinan Heritage Society, Ulopan and other groups who adopted a rigid screening process.
Names of the awardees were withheld by the committee and will be known on awards night.
