ALAMINOS CITY–The first-of-its kind factory for engineered bamboos in the country will rise here within the year to complementing the E-Kawayan Processing Center earlier established by the Alaminos City government in Barangay Boliney.

Named Hundred Islands E-Kawayan Factory, a groundbreaking ceremony was held last week in Barangay Tangcarang.

Once fully operational, the factory is expected to induce massive bamboo planting in Pangasinan, making it as another source of living for farmers in the rural areas of Alaminos and western Pangasinan.

Mayor Hernani Braganza, who led the groundbreaking ceremony, said “the project will enhance the establishment of bamboo plantations that would supply the needed raw materials for the project.”

The factory will process and transform bamboos into different and advanced forms of products by shaping these into slats, then glued for log-like lumber of various sizes that could be used as an alternative for wood products and construction.

Aside from promoting renewable and sustainable development, the E-Kawayan factory, which is based on the E-Kawayan technology developed by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac, Ilocos Norte, is seen to make Alaminos a regional center of the bamboo industry.

GRANTS AND PARTNERSHIPS

The factory was built with the help of a P31 million assistance from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

Braganza cited the help of Pagcor Chairman Cristino Naguiat and Atty. Jorge Sarmiento, president and chief operating officer, for providing financial assistance, and  Dr.  Stanley Malab of  MMSU who  introduced to him the E-Kawayan technology.

The Hundred Islands E-Kawayan Processing Center was earlier established with the help of MMSU, the Department of Trade and Industry  (DTI) and the Cottage Industry and Technology Center (CITC).

Malab joined Braganza in the groundbreaking rites, along with DTI Undersecretary Merly Cruz, and Maria Elisa Cruz and Danilo Pascual, both of PAGCOR.
