Holiness this week

FOR the Catholic faithful, who comprise the majority of the Filipino people, this week is observed as Holy Week, the culmination of the Lenten Season, which is a time for sacrifices and reflection on the life, suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

But the long non-working weekend that the Holy Week observance provides, starting on Maundy Thursday, has also borne the tradition of visiting home provinces or-and going on a beach holiday at this time of the year, which is also the summer season and students are on school break.

As in every past year, there will be plenty of travellers moving around and the bus stations, sea and airports, and the roads will be crowded. People’s stress levels could easily shoot up, sparking scuffles and other untoward incidents. Odds for drowning accidents are also high at the beach destinations such as in Lingayen and Dagupan.  Let’s do our mighty best to avoid all these.

And in the midst of the relaxation and enjoyment with family and friends, whether or not a Catholic, it would be good to take some time to think about the spirit of Lent as embodied by the life led by Jesus Christ, one of generosity and goodness – about going out of ourselves to give kindness to others, which is what holiness is all about.

Numbers game

THE recent surveys on the impeachment trial tend to show that majority have lost trust in Chief Justice Renato Corona. Those who didn’t trust Corona anymore numbered 47 percent, the undecided registered 29 percent. This is to be expected because the trial has only so far listened to the charges of the prosecution, and the defense has only started to rebut the charges.

A common sentiment among the undecided is “The impeachment trial is a joke because Corona had already been convicted even before the proceedings had started.”

The poll numbers will likely change once the defense rests its case. But what will not change is the fact that 16 senators are needed to convict CJ Corona and only 8 senators to acquit.
