Espino downplays coup attempt vs. P-Noy

LINGAYEN– “No coup d’etat attempt will succeed against President Benigno Aquino III on account of his relentless drive for reforms and good governance.”

This was stressed by Gov. Amado Espino Jr. as he lauded P-Noy’s call to the new graduates of the Philippine Military Academy to shun bribery and self-interests once they step out of the institution.

Espino, himself a graduate of PMA Class ’72 and a founding member of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM), said no regime change can happen if not backed by the Filipino people, learning from the painful lessons of his fellow RAM soldiers who joined the series of coup attempts in the late ‘80s against former President Cory Aquino, P-Noy’s late mother.

“The situations then and now are far different and those thinking of unseating President Aquino III should think twice,” said Espino.

The governor was then a Metrodiscom commander when he joined fellow officers including former Defense Secretary Renato de Villa, Zambales Gov. Jun Ebdane, former Sta. Barbara Mayor Reynaldo V. Velasco, former PNP Chief Avelino “Sonny” Razon, Laoac Mayor Boying Alarcio, and NCRPO Director Allan Purisima who were all under the wings of former President Fidel V. Ramos, in defending the Cory Aquino administration.

HIGH RATING

Espino also cited the President’s continuous high trust and approval ratings in his 18-month old administration and said that must be factored in by those cooking up a coup plot against the incumbent President.

The governor said President Aquino III’s exhortation to the 187 members of PMA “Bagwis Class” to shun the temptations of corruption was a timely call since these young officers will be faced with challenges to serve and protect the Filipino people against the enemies of the state such as the armed groups in the mountains and criminal gangs in urban areas.

The Pangasinan governor and former congressman who was among the principal authors of the Magna Carta for Policemen also lauded the Aquino administration’s housing projects, notably the 21,800 housing units for policemen and soldiers in Luzon, a number of which are constructed in the province, with another 31,200 to follow in the next 15 months.
