FVR turns 84

TWELVE years after finishing his elected term to the highest public position in the land, former President Fidel V. Ramos, who turns 84 today, refuses to be “tired even while retired”.

Born in a rented home in Lingayen, on March 18, 1928 to parents Atty. Narciso Ramos and public school teacher Angela Valdez, FVR continues to be active in the public scene as an outspoken and critical “elder brother”.

Last March 12, a marker in his honor was unveiled at the San Roque Multi-Purpose (SRMP) project, which was initiated during his term as President.

The San Roque Power Corporation, which manages the project, said the marker is in appreciation of FVR’s political will to get the SRMP rolling in 1997.

In a short program, senior executives of Marubeni Corporation and Kansai Electric Power Corporation, partners and financiers of the project, acknowledged Ramos as the driving force of the SRMP, a resource for power generation and irrigation.

SRPC President and Chief Executive Officer Ryukichi Kawaguchi said the people who at first opposed the project are now their partners in building sustainable communities.

“We continue to improve the lives of people, livelihood, education, medical program and basic community projects like the completion of roads linking the towns of San Manuel and San Nicolas,” Kawaguchi said.

Ramos thanked the SRPC OFFICIALS for the honor and recognition given to him.

“This project is not just for the Philippines but for all Filipinos. We must visualize SRPC as a center of our big development area,” Ramos said.

Also present during the marker unveiling are Congresswoman Marlyn Agabas, Governors Amado Espino Jr. of Pangasinan and Nestor Fongwan of Benguet, the two provinces covered by the project.

FVR BOOK

Meanwhile, WOW (Words of Wisdom) FVR 111111-111, a 300-page book of quotations from FVR launched last year, will be available in National Bookstore and Powerbooks branches starting this week.

In the book’s foreword, FVR wrote: “This book, 111111-111 FVR WOW or Words of Wisdom, was the outcome of a concept I initially imparted to our family biographer, Melandrew T. Velasco. It was inspired by my desire to honor fittingly the public service of my father Narciso (born on 11November 1900 in Asingan, Pangasinan) whose 111th birth anniversary we celebrate 11 November 2011.” (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
