Sinverguenza!

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

I BELIEVE the boxing buffs like me who saw the post fight footage of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight title fight between Filipino boxer Johnriel Casimero and Argentina’s Luis Lazarte last Saturday night that Casimero won via a 10th round stoppage, realized that his enemy proved to be not only his opponent inside the ring but also the local hero’s unruly fans. Fortunately, Casimiro and his team survived the unexpected riot and came home proud with the belt for his countrymen. He’s now the sixth Filipino reigning champion of the world after Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, Brian Viloria and our very own Pozorrubian Ana Julaton.

We saw how debris flew all around the ring from angry enthusiasts who couldn’t accept their idol’s defeat after the referee stopped the fight early in the 10th round (because Lazarte was already defenseless and on the verge of being knocked out cold) even before the ring announcer could step inside the ring to formally announce the verdict and the official time. Chairs, water bottles and hard objects were thrown at Casimero’s group, including the referee Eddie Claudio who suffered a busted mouth. (Claudio is also Hispanic). The first Filipino boxing icon Gabriel “Flash” Elorde suffered a similar fate during his battle with Frankie Narvaez in the 1960’s in the United States. I recall that after the announcer proclaimed Elorde as the winner, hell broke loose and mad fans went berserk, similar to what happened last Saturday.

Argentinians are Hispanics or Latinos like the Mexicans, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilians, Chileans, Peruvians, Costa Ricans, Puerto Ricans, Nicaraguans, Panamanians, Salvadorians, Bolivians, Ecuadorians, Colombians, Paraguayans, Uruguayans, and Venezuelans, to name many. They are generally noted for their impulsiveness and temperamental behaviour. If you are a football fan, you know of the many times the events ended up in violence among them resulting in many injuries and fatalities. Like the Europeans, the Latinos’ favorite sport is football. They die and cry for it. The rowdy Argentinian fans don’t know how to accept defeat and don’t hesitate to harm the players like they did to Casimero and his group. I would describe them as ineducado, loco, dementado, devencijado y sirvenguenza hombres. The world famous ditty titled “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” really suits them. We are certainly more civilized than they although we belong to a third world country, as they say.

Nogrito por favor senores Argentinos, porque eso es muy echar a perder la propiaestampa de tu nacion.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. “Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. “Woe to you, scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. “Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. “ MATTHEW 22: 25-28
