THE Dagupan Sangguniang Panglunsod’s sessions outside of the hall has proven valuable in addressing concerns that directly affect the barangays.

This was the assessment of Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), who promised to hold more of such sessions in the future.

“Conducting the sessions in the communities has been very effective in drawing out problems, which are not usually lobbied to the government,” Fernandez said during the KBP Forum on Thursday.

She added, “Many residents are reluctant to air their concerns during regular sessions at the hall for fear they might contradict the interests of their barangay leaders.”

Among the problems brought out during the sessions were the illegal drug trade, soil erosion, illegal gambling and the illegal business operations in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, and livelihood and garbage problem in Barangay Calmay.

Likewise, the session in Barangay Tebeng helped expedite the repair of the road there with the passing of a resolution requesting Rep. Gina de Venecia of the Fourth District to allocate funds from her priority development fund.

The councilors also provided chairs to a school in Barangay Salapingao where they saw pupils sitting on the floor during classes.

“The councilors have been very supportive,” Fernandez said.

Other barangay leaders have already invited the city council to hold session in their respective areas, according to Fernandez.

“Holding the sessions outside the session hall is tedious, but reaching out to the masses is of utmost importance,” she stressed. (PIA-Pangasinan)
