2012 PALARONG PAMBANSA

LINGAYEN–The countdown for the Palarong Pambansa 2012 in May has begun with the arrival here of members of the Special National Management Committee of the Department of Education (DepEd) last February 8.

While most of the games from May 6 to 12 will be held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here in the capital town, the cities of Dagupan and San Carlos and the municipalities of Binmaley and Bugallon will also serve as venues.

The secretariat, the command center, and the crisis management office will be housed at the NRSCC.

Provincial sports Coordinator Francis Dela Cruz said some 10,000 visitors, including the participating athletes from public and private elementary schools in the 17 regions around the country, their coaches and parents, are expected to arrive for the event.

Meanwhile, the DepEd representatives expressed satisfaction over the preparations being undertaken by the provincial government.

“Everything seems to be on track. The province has a lot to offer,” DepEd Undersecretary Francisco Valera said in a press conference at the Sison Auditorium.

Undersecretaries Rizalino Rivera and Alberto Muyot and assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali were also present.

P135.6M FOR REPAIRS

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said just a few things remain to be ironed out, including the repair of some of the venues and school classrooms, which will serve as billeting quarters.

Additional sports equipment and beddings will be provided by the Philippine Sports Commission, Dela Cruz said.

Varela said DepEd allocated P205.3 million for this year’s, of which, at least P135.6 million will be spent for the repair of facilities in the playing venues.

The remaining amount will be spent in pre-regional and regional athletic meets still being conducted around the country.

The province, according to Baraan, will provide food for the athletes.

Baraan also announced that a website has been designed for the event so that the public can view the games online in real time.

Both Vice-Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim and the DepEd officials expressed hope that the 2012 games will serve as a benchmark for future Palarong Pambansa events.

Rivera said the DepEd will do its best to have President Benigno Aquino III present during the opening ceremony on May 6.

This is the second time since 1995 for Pangasinan to host the event.

Last year’s host was Dapitan City with the National Capital Region winning the championship in both the elementary and secondary divisions. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
