THE corporate social responsibility program of Sual Power Station continues to serve as a catalyst of development in its host town Sual and neighboring areas through various projects under its.

The “Gintong Binhi ng Karunungan,” a scholarship program for less-privileged but deserving students, is one such project that has helped the communities.

One of its scholars from Sual, Erika Shimamura, a second year student, said, “Nagbibigay po sila ng monthly allowance, saka full tuition at miscellaneous fee kaya wala na pong ginagastos at pino-problema ang pamilya ko sa akin, all I need to do is to study.”

Another beneficiary is Edd Kenneth Magno from Manaoag, a first year student.

Malaki po ang tulong sa amin ng scholarship lalo na’t tatlo kaming nagaaral ngayon sa kolehiyo ,” he said.

The young beneficiaries are also given team-building and leadership training during school breaks.

Mark Roldan Cancino of Bugallon, a third year student, says, “every summer nagte-team building kami para mas madagdagan ang aming kaalaman sa leadership. At marami akong natutunan every team building namin.”

Carmella Palaganas, public relations consultant of Team Energy, operator of the Sual Power Plant, said the program provides support and advice to the scholars, standing like a second mother to them.

Once the scholars completed their studies, they are given the opportunity to be employed at the Sual station or its sister power stations operated by Team Energy, a partnership between Tokyo Electric Power Company and Marubeni Corporation.

To apply and qualify for the scholarship, a student must present a barangay clearance, a grade not less than 85 in Math, English and Science, and pass the scholarship exam. A background check will also be conducted by the company to determine social status eligibility, among others. Scholars are required to maintain an average of not less than 85, and no dropped or incomplete subjects.–Mark Gil de la Cruz
