PAMMA upends AIE C; UL gores PIMSAT
3RD JIMMY FERNANDEZ CUP
IN the battle of leaders, the Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA) Sea Lions downed AIE College Golden Eagles, 96-93, in the twin-header’s main game of the Inter-Collegiate Invitational Basketball Championship of the 3rd Jimmy Fernandez Cup last Monday, at the DWAD Gym in Dagupan.
PAMMA, with its five key players exploding in double figures, slowly eroded a 12-point deficit at the start of the last period at the expense of its erratic rivals and equaled the score at 91 one minute, 10 seconds remaining in the game.
The Sea Lions, in a 5-2 run, went on to win and grab solo leadership of the tournament.
The Eagles’ Jeffrey Yanes was the top scorer for the day.
In the first game, University of Luzon Golden Tigers mercilessly demolished perennial cellar-dweller PIMSAT Colleges Dragons, 99-70, to remain in contention for one of the slots for the finals.
Four Tigers, with a combined total of 66 points, engineered the massacre on a 19-5 flurry in the first period and never looked back.
The win-loss cards of the teams as of February 6: PAMMA 4-1; UL 5-2; AIE-C 3-2; UEP 4-3; PUNP 2-3; LNU 1-2; PIMSAT 0-7.
After the round robin elimination, the top two squads will advance to the championship round in a best-of-three series with the champion earning the right to represent Region I in the Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Championship in Naga City, on March 27 – April 1.–Philamer Celi
