Pangasinan voters up by 10%-15% in 2010
THE number of voters in the 2010 election in the province is expected to increase only by 10% to 15% following the relatively poor turnout of new registrants in the enlistment that started last week.
Reddy Balarbar, Commission on Elections (Comelec) supervisor of Pangasinan, said reports from the municipal election registrars indicate that first-time voters have began signing up further boosting the province’s 1.36 million registered voters, one of the five highest among provinces in the country.
Balarbar noted that the turnout was lower compared to the last registration undertaken in October and he attributed this to a campaign among candidates for barangay positions who provided transport for potential voters.
“Since these barangay captains are not candidates in the 2010 election, perhaps the new registrants are now left to do it on their own,” Balarbar said in an interview with The PUNCH.
He added that apart from registering new voters, the period is the time for registered voters to change their polling precincts, or reactivate their record in the Comelec after failing to vote in previous elections.
So far, the areas with the highest number of registrants are noted in Asingan, Alaminos City, Dagupan City, Villasis, San Manuel, Umingan, Malasiqui, and Binalonan.
The registration period is until December 15 next year and qualified voters must present valid identification card.#
