Red tide alert up in Bani
SAN FERNANDO CITY–A red tide alert is now up along the coastal area of Barangay Wawa in Bani.
But the infestation is confined in this area; other coastal towns such as neighboring Anda and Bolinao are free from the red tide toxin, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office.
In an advisory issued January 30, BFAR warned the public to refrain from gathering, transporting, marketing, and eating shellfish from Wawa as the level of the paralytic shellfish toxin, commonly known as red tide, has exceeded regulatory limit.
Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs harvested from the area remain safe for human consumption provided these are fresh and washed thoroughly and the internal organs removed before cooking.
BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said local government units (LGUs) in Pangasinan have been called on to strictly enforce the advisory.
BFAR, in coordination with the LGUs, regularly monitors coastal areas for the presence of the red tide organism.
