Binmaley’s challenge: Catch a fish by hand
“KAMBOG ED KAPOKOKAN”
THEY call it the “Binmaley way”.
Harvesting marine products by hand, that is.
And they are not just talking about fish; count in the perilous crabs as well.
The municipality of Binmaley is celebrating this unique trait of its townsfolk with the launching of the ‘Kambog ed Kapokokan’, a fish-catching tournament that will be part of this year’s Sigay Festival, a celebration of the town’s aquaculture industry.
Edgar Ocampo, the town’s market supervisor and in-charge of the event, said the tournament aptly depicts the rich custom of the Binmaleyans.
Kambog, in the Pangasinan language, means the act of catching fish in a drained pond, which is locally termed pokok.
The ‘kambogan’ tournament, set at 7:00 a.m. on January 29, will be held at the pond situated near the Bangsal Lechon and Seafood Restaurant in Nansangaan.
It is open to all residents of Binmaley, 16 years old and above, but only two residents per barangay will be allowed to participate.
The game will be facilitated by the Disaster Emergency Rescue Team (DERT) who will tag and release 10 crabs and 20 milkfish in the drained pond.
The crabs will vary in sizes, with each size corresponding to a cash prize.
The contestants will then be given the signal to get into the pond and outdo each other in catching the marine products.
Ocampo said they envision this new event to become part of the annual Sigay Festival. (PIA-Pangasinan/ April Montes)
