MALASIQUI– The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan (ALD) now has its own monastery, located in Barangay Nancapian here, built on a land donated by philanthropist Baby Arenas and her daughter 3rd District Rep. Rachel Arenas.

The Poor Clare Monastery of Saint James the Apostle was inaugurated in the morning of January 21 through a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Archbishop Socrates Villegas with other priests as co-celebrants.

“This monastery is the powerhouse of (our active ministry in) the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan,” Villegas said in his homily.

The monastery, he added, will serve as the house of religious contemplative nuns who will pray for the sanctification of priests and offer their sacrifices to sustain the church mission for the world.

Arenas and her mother cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Hundreds of Catholic faithful from the different parishes of the archdiocese and guests from the province of Bataan, where Villegas was previously assigned as bishop, attended the event.

Upon his appointment to the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese on November 2009, Villegas said he made it one of his priorities to construct a religious contemplative monastery.

The monastery, which will be for cloistered nuns, is under the jurisdiction of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish (OMPHP) of Canan Norte, Malasiqui and currently under the pastoral care of Rev. Fr. Democrito Umagtam, OMPHP’s Parish Priest.
