YMCA-Filipinas Wado Ryu shine
Team YMCA- Wado Ryu Karate, bannered by two Philippine team members and three national champions, scored 4 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals in the 1st International Philippine Goodwill Karate Championships held October 25 to 26 at the Mandaluyong City Gymnasium.
Jayson Ramil Macaalay and Fidel Salvador Reyes, fresh from their good performance in the 9th AKP Asians karate championships held in Malaysia August 24 to 31, led the team’s medal harvest.
Jason Ramil Macaalay, a nursing student at University of Pangasinan, scored two gold in the 16 to 17 years old boys kumite and advance kata.
National champion John Enrico Vasquez, a grade I student at Mother Goose Special Science System Inc. got a gold in the 6 to 7 years old advance kata while Jona Reyes, a masscom sophomore student at St. Louis University, won the team’s fourth gold in the 18 and above women’s advance and a bronze in minus 48 kg. kumite.
Meanwhile, Reyes, a senior high school student at University of Luzon, won the silver in kumite and bronze in advance kata.
Other medalists in the team were: Elizabeth Maude Eden of St. Robert Bellarmine, silver in the 7 years old below girls novice kata; Keifer Espino of Mother Lourdes Learning Center, a silver in the 8 to 9boy’s intermediate kata; John Matthew Manantan of La Sallete School, a silver in the 10 to 11 years old boys kumite; John Meverick Edralin of LNU Special Science, a silver in the 12 to 13 years old boys plus 45 kg. and bronze in the intermediate kata; Jeramiel Gutierrez of La Marea Academy, a bronze in the 8 to 9 years old boys kumite; Raniel Isabel Gutierrez of La Marea Academy, a bronze in the 10 to 11 girls kumite; and Jaime Macatabag of UL, a bronze in the 18 years old men’s advance kata.
