Prov’l library beefs up book collection

THE Provincial Library has beefed up its collection of books, reading materials and computer units as part of Gov. Amado T. Espino’s campaign to raise the quality of public education in Pangasinan.

Provincial Librarian Evangeline R. Paragas said the public library now has 20,027 volumes, up from 14,625 volumes prior to the incumbency of the Espino administration, and it continues to expand its collection through the ‘Share a Book’ program.

“We tap non-government organizations, balikbayans and visitors to donate books and materials for the library and the province moreover is a recipient of yearly book allocations from the National Library of the Philippines,” she said.

Paragas added that the governor also increased the budget for books and periodical subscriptions to provide adequate and updated reading materials for all types of readers.

The library has also coped with technological advances and electronic information services.

“We have at present 24 units of computers from the former four units and our internet service that became available during Gov. Espino’s term is free,” the librarian said, noting an average daily computer service attendance of 72 percent.

A cable television is also available to the public for current local and international I news.

Paragas said the most tangible accomplishment of the library is the increase of its visitors that now averages of 156 daily.

Paragas also pointed out that library employees attend in-service trainings, workshops, seminars, conferences and lectures to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Each section of the library has a front line  competent staff to assist and provide accurate information to clients.

Updates on acquired or donated reading materials and other activities are posted in the bulletin board for the information of the public while storytelling sessions are also conducted to encourage children to read and make use of the library.

Now permanently located within a 612 square meter lot inside the capitol complex from the 412 square meters in previous years, the library has a seating capacity of 150 from its former 50 seats and is equipped with proper ventilation, lighting and airconditioning.

The Provincial Library has earned great compliments from local and foreign visitors who admire its learning-conducive ambiance and was awarded as a 5S (Sort, Systematize, Sweep, Sanitize and Self-Discipline) Practitioner in 2009 and Best Performing Office (Category A) among the provincial offices in Pangasinan in 2011.
