China products with melamine not sold in P’sinan

PANGASINENSES can heave a sigh of relief because none of the melamine-contaminated milk products from China are being sold in the province, at least for now.

Regular monitoring by the region’s Department of Health of products on the shelves of groceries and supermarkets around the province and the region so far revealed that all products referred to the Bureau of Food and Drug laboratory have proved negative of melamine.

With exception of La Union where a warehouse was recently found stocked with Chinese goods, the provinces of Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur are so far deemed melamine-free.

However, Dr. Eduardo Janairo, DOH regional director says regular monitoring of food outlets will continue without let-up until testing at the BFAD shall have been completed.

He added that hospitals are on the alert for patients complaining of kidney problems to determine if these were caused by consumption of contaminated food and milk products from China.

“Wala masyadong Chinese products na binebenta rito sa region 1,” he said.

He said that his office picks up products off the shelves randomly including those of brands already being tested by BFAD and submit these to BFAD to form part of the lot for testing.

The regional office will continue monitoring this time to include inventory of sari-sari stores although it believes chances of discovering infected brands will be minimal since the small storeowners buy their stocks from local big wholesalers in the region whose outlets are constantly monitored. –#
