Cruz hails new impeachment

THE impeachment case filed last week by Jose de Venecia III, son of 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is more symbolic than realistic, according to Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz.

Nonetheless, Cruz underscored its value as a continuing vigilance against corruption in government.

“Do not underestimate symbols because symbols are very strong and their strength is precisely drawn from the perceived reality carried by the symbol,” he said.

Cruz said none of the previous impeachment cases against Arroyo has ever been ‘seriously tackled’ and ‘all thrown out by political numerical strength’.

“The numbers dictate not what is right or wrong but rather what they don’t like and what they like, period,” said Cruz, a staunch critic of the present administration.

He said he won’t be surprised if this impeachment case filed by de Venecia with Iloilo Vice Gov. Rolex Suplico and lawyer Harry Roque will again be dismissed only because of a lack of political allies and not because of insufficiency of form and substance.

“This only means on every direct message. That there are good number of people who believe that the impeachment cases are sufficient in form and substance and they’ll just go on filing it till thy kingdom come,” he said.

Cruz believes that the President cannot escape all these criminal and civil cases forever.

“Time will come that divested of immunity from suit, the object of the complaint will have to face all these which are many and big ones,” he said. #
