Alcala’s Guinness bid all set
ALCALA–It’s all systems go for Alcala town’s bid for the Guinness World Records.
After three dry runs, the people of Alcala are confident that their rustic town by the bank of the Agno River will soon land in the world map by breaking two world records in the Guinness Book.
Mayor Manuel Collado expressed optimism that the town can break the world longest grill record at 32.84 meters (107 feet, eight inches) made by the residential home Haus Ostertat, St. Wendel Werschweiler of Germany on May 14, 2004 as part of the home’s 10th anniversary festival.
Hundreds of townspeople watched the last March 25 dry run in front of the Alcala Central School and knew that it is now only a matter of time before they can annex the record for world’s longest grill and the world’s longest barbecue.
The record for the world’s longest barbecue measured 1,007.56 meters (3,305.64 feet) was established by the people of Dagupan City, Philippines on May 3, 2003 as part of the city’s Bangus Festival.
Mayor Collado said they hired 70 welders to build the soon- to-be the longest grill at 150 meters and intends to create a three kilometer barbecue, where they will roast meat and fish, in the afternoon till evening of April 29.
Collado proudly announced that not even a single centavo of municipal government fund will be spent for the activity since all the expenses, including the building of the grills and their materials are being bankrolled by overseas Alcala residents joining a Grand Homecoming on the last week of April.
He said it was the overseas Alcalinians who suggested a different kind of activity to perk up their city fiesta in honor of Holy Cross.
The essence of these two record-breaking feats is unity and cooperation, said Eduardo Tolentino, president of the Rang-ay ti Alcala Foundation, which is staging the activity with the help of the municipal government.
The overseas residents already paid for more than 1,000 grills at $100 per. The money, deposited with the Rang-Ay ti Alcala Foundation, will finance projects of the municipality along the lines of health and education.
