Pascua keeps winning streak, tops Bugallon chess tilt
BUGALLON—There’s no stopping international Chess Federation (FIDE) Master Haridas Pascua as he again topped another local chess tournament, this time the Gen. Jose Torres Bugallon Chess Tournament held here on January 7 and 8.
Pascua, a resident of Mangatarem, split the point with Fidel Labuanan of Laoac town in the sixth round to win the title and received a P5,000 cash prize.
Pascua, a first year Information Technology student at the University of Baguio, had consecutively won several tournaments, including the Libsong East Chess Tournament and the 3rd Mayor Ernesto ‘Jonas’ C. Castaneda Open Chess tournament, both held in Lingayen last December and organized by the Pangasinan Chess Federation.
Tied for second to fourth place, with 5.5 points each, were Wesley Bustillos and Leonardo Abalos Jr.
Trailing them were Dick Gicain, Romy Fagon and Labuanan (4 pts each), and Ely John Estabillo, Casiano Torres, Verth Alora and Zaldy Falcon (3.5 pts).
Meanwhile, Antonio Almodal III won the 12-player kiddie category by posting 4.5 points
Completing the winner’s list were Joshua Magno (4 pts), Danica Ablang and Benjamin Cortez (3.5 pts), Chad Ablang, Joshua Palaganas and Joey Roi Torres (3 pts).
Special awards went to Bustillos for the top senior prize; Danica Alexis Ablang, top lady; and Argee Valenton, top local player. (PIA-Pangasinan)
