DAGUPAN Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. called on all barangay units to sustain their efforts in improving sanitation for the benefit of families in the city.

“You have full appreciation of problems in your respective areas. I ask you to reach out and teach families and individuals to inculcate in them sound sanitation practices,” said Fernandez during the 2nd Communications Planning Workshop for the Sustainable Sanitation for East Asia (SUSEA) research project.

Dagupan is one of the six pilot cities in the country.

Fernandez said all units and families are needed to help implement the education campaign to reduce acute gastroenteritis (AGE) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH).

Baseline indicators from the final report of the SUSEA project show that sanitation practices can be greatly improved in 10 of the city’s 31 barangays.

The SUSEA research project is assisted by the Department of Health, Coffey International, Water and Sanitation Philippines (WSP) and Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

The city mayor said information and education activities are essential to the success of a sustainable sanitation communication plan to ensure positive behavioral change and promote safe and healthy living.

“No amount of balanced nutrition will succeed if we do not educate the people on how to stop parasitism and contain its spread,” he said.

He commended the efforts of the workshop participants for the SUSEA project in their efforts to design an effective intervention and communication plan.

Fernandez said materials generated in that workshop will provide “strong setting for imparting useful information”.—LM
