Milo Little Olympics opens

LINGAYEN—Hostilities in the four-day 11th Milo Little Olympics have begun after opening ceremonies on September 12 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

The meet, participated in by young athletes from four regions in the country, continued over the weekend and will resume on September 20 with some 5,000 athletes from public and private elementary and high schools from Regions I, II and III and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) seeing action.

According to Modesto Operaña, consultant on Sports and Development of the provincial government, Pangasinan has been the perennial annual host of the games because of the province’s world-class sports facilities.

Apart from the NRSCC, the CSI City Mall and CSI Stadia in Lucao, Dagupan City, serve as venues for table tennis, gymnastics, taekwondo and badminton competitions.

Football is being played at the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office in Lingayen while chess competition is being held at the President’s Hotel, also in Lingayen.

Tess Bernardino, Milo sports organizer, lauded the provincial government headed by Gov. Espino, Jr. for being supportive to the Milo Little Olympics and to budding athletes. Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias-Agabas attended the opening ceremonies representing Espino.

The Milo Little Olympics, whose theme this year is “Little Champions Big Dreams”, has been a crowd-drawer over the years because of its popularity among the young.

Participating in the yearly Olympic are children aged 12 years old and below in the elementary level and 17 years old and below for the high school level

The 2007 over-all champion, Baguio City National High School and the University of Baguio, will defend their titles in 11 sporting events.

These include athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.
