The Lion’s head soon at Hundred Islands Park
ALAMINOS CITY–A stone lion’s head at the center of Hundred Islands National Park?
Why not, says the Lions Club International (LCI) represented by District Governor Anacleto Zamoranos, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) represented by its executive director Dr. Westly Rosario and the city government through Mayor Hernani Braganza.
A memorandum of agreement is now being drafted among the three parties for the development of the Lions Island and Sea Sanctuary at the HINP.
Rosario said there had been initial talks regarding the project and the member Lions are thankful to Braganza for offering one island to them for this purpose.
He said the lion’s head, similar to the famous sculpture located along Kennon Road on the way to Baguio City, will serve as an added attraction for the islands and help in the preservation of environment at the popular tourism destination.
Rosario said they will look for a suitable island with a boulder from which the lion’s head could be carved by a sculptor.
The lions head will symbolize LCI’s ideals and support for the preservation and care for the environment, particularly fisheries conservation and coastal resource management.
In their talks, Rosario suggested that the local government invests on a boat that with a transparent flooring so that visitors can enjoy watching fish species and corals during their ride.
The NFRDI plans to set up a sea sanctuary within the park to serve as a relocation site for corals removed from nearby coastal areas being developed into ports and other development projects.
It will use the sanctuary as experimental sites for artificial propagation of corals and growing areas of various marine organisms being studied by NFRDI.
The city government has been host to numerous marine environmental projects jointly implemented with government and research institutes and civic clubs, and has welcomed the NFRDI’s plan for a sea sanctuary.#
