SAN FABIAN–It is the stuff of crime thriller books and television shows.

A drum with a human body stuffed in it and sealed with cement was found barely floating at the South China Sea near the coast here and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is set to conduct a test on the cadaver to identify it.

Could it be that of the kidnapped Councilor Roland Villegas?

Chief Inspector Chito Esmenda, the town police chief, said he has already sent a letter to the NBI requesting the latter to under take the test and has also coordinated with the family of Villegas for the councilor’s dental records.

The NBI team is expected to arrive this week and Villegas’ family, through his brother, 4th District Board Member Liberato Villegas, has agreed to cooperate.

Esmenda has also alerted other police stations about reported missing persons.

The gray plastic drum floating in the sea fronting Barangay Nibaliw Narvarte, was chanced upon by fishermen who quickly reported it to the police.

The police, in turn ordered that the drum be buried at the town cemetery to avoid the spread of a disease.

“I believe it’s 70 percent human and the denim pants worn by that person was already visible at the bottom of the drum,” Esmenda said.

Villegas, barangay chairman of Anonang and former councilor representing the Liga ng mga Barangay, has been missing for several months after he was reportedly abducted by armed men.

Initial police investigation indicate the drum had been in the sea for at least four to six months given by the presence of oyster shells attached to it.#
