As the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” Pagsasarili project moves into its fourth year, a “best agricultural research” award has been launched to further strengthen and expand the program.

“The project intends to promote the development of sustainability, productivity and, at the same time, the school to serve as model within the community with regards to food production,” said Dr. Danilo Sison, Dagupan City Schools Division education supervisor in-charge of Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan.

Sison cited hydroponic gardening, which is particularly useful in island barangays given limited farm space, as an example of an agricultural innovation

“With that research, we can plant without soil, and that’s an additional feature of the program,” he said.

The evaluation for research projects is scheduled by the end of the year.

“Usually tina-timing ang program ‘pag di na gaanong umuulan and the evaluation starts on December,” he added.

The Gulayan program, participated in by public elementary and secondary schools, is a joint undertaking of the Department of Education (DEPED) and the Dagupan city government through the City Agriculture Office.

Sison expressed optimism that this year’s program will be more successful given the full support of the city government.

He said Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. has committed to give garden soil to schools

The program not just focuses on agriculture but also includes aquaculture, poultry and animal raising.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has distributed tilapia fingerlings for the program and provides technical assistance.–CSR
