Dengue cases on the rise
Higher than last year
LINGAYEN–With the rainy season on, dengue cases are again on the rise and the number reported so far this year is higher than in the last two years.
The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has logged 236 suspected dengue cases with one death for the period January to July14 this year.
For the same period in 2006, there were 229 cases and two deaths, while in 2007, 188 cases and four deaths, according to Dr. Jackson Soriano, officer-in-charge at the PHO.
Based on the PHO report, the town that reported the highest number of dengue cases is Bayambang. The others are Malasiqui, Calasiao and Urdaneta City with 15 cases each; Lingayen,13; Binmaley, 11; and eight each in Mangaldan, Sta. Barbara, San Carlos City and Natividad.
Soriano said dengue cases usually increase during the rainy season beginning June and peak in August and September because there are more places for stagnant water brought about by the rains which serve as breeding ground for the mosquito vector. (Aedes aegypti).
Soriano said teams have been deployed immediately to the municipalities affected for further monitoring, ocular inspection of houses with cases, and to intensify the PHO program for preventing dengue dubbed 4S – Search and Destroy, Seek Early Consultation, Self Protection and Say No to Fogging (except for impending outbreak, fogging and larvicide treatment).#
