Sudoku is a logic puzzle where the “objective is to fill a 9+9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3+3 boxes (also called blocks or regions) contains the digits from 1 to 9 only one time each.”

The Philippine delegation was selected by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), an organization of math experts and teachers in the country that trains and sends Filipino students to different mathematics competitions abroad including the United States.

“Again, we have proven the Filipino students are bright and can compete in international competitions such as the Sudoku Challenge. We are very happy with the results,” said Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president, and the first Filipino to receive the Paul Erdos Award for mathematics.

Chua said Filipino students will be competing in various math competitions abroad including Hong Kong, Singapore, China and India in the coming months.

MTG organized the Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge to select the country’s representatives to the Singapore Sudoku competition. There were six contestants from the Philippines including Cua.

Aside from the $10,000, Cua was presented a basket of goodies from Brand’s health supplement and a trophy.

Cua was also part of the Philippine delegation that competed in the American Regions Mathematics League held at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in May this year.
