MAYOR AT THE FRONTLINE — Mayor Belen Fernandez got well-deserved praises from netizens when they saw her on Facebook manning the frontline in middle of the crisis. She was seen garbed in ordinary uniform of a city hall employee, with a Dagupan seal, in denim pants and a pair of rain boots while leading the rescue and relief operations for flood victims of Dagupan.

One netizen who saw her on Facebook, sitting at the back of a moving 6 x 6 truck, in front of members of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, commented “She (Belen) is the only mayor in Dagupan and perhaps throughout the country “na lumulusong sa baha”

On one occasion, netizens saw her inspecting flooded areas on board her SUV personally doing a video footage of the flood in the city. She and staff would stop to offer a ride to those wading in flood waters so they can reach their destination faster.

The video footages were viewed in other countries and one of those who watched this was Christopher Viray from Sydney Australia. He thanked the mayor for doing a herculean job for her constituents.

Chris is from Calasiao and formerly with THE PUNCH who got a complete picture of what happened in Dagupan and Pangasinan through the video footage made by Mayor Fernandez herself.

Chris said: “Mayor Belen, the greatest gift Dagupeños ever had, who never stops helping and caring people that she loves.”

Netizens saw a Mayor Belen who made sure her personal comfort did not come first ahead of the needs of her suffering people.

She was very visible in the middle of flooded streets evidently lacking sleep unlike others before her who were never seen walking through flooded streets.

She told me her best consolation is merely seeing the people that she helped become happy and comfortable. – Leonardo Micua
