Dagupan is Number 1!

By Gonzalo Duque

DAGUPAN City — We mean Dagupenos and their confreres – is ecstatic!

Why? Finally, it was able to establish itself as No. 1, Numero Uno, sangka maongan, in sports!

Yes, in the Region! Number One in Region One, kuanyo pa?

Congrats to “Superwoman” Mayora Belen T. Fernandez for the leadership. Oo nga, we should not fail to put the “T” in her name because it symbolizes No. 1, leadership non pareil.

Yes, it’s the very first time…. So pardon our orgasmic rhetoric. Dagupan City trounces all of ‘em – San Carlos City, Urdaneta City, Alaminos City, Pangasinan I, Pangasinan II, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union.

In the past, before the advent of Mayor BTF, Dagupan City was always a tail-ender.

Knowing that sports is a symbol of leadership, the mayor went to work. She told herself, “this should not be the case. We shall beat the odds!”

And, armed with her team in the Dep-Ed, then under Froserfina Bravo to now Ms. Lorna Bugayong and the rest — we call it the Division Team, we urged them to go the extra mile!

They hired fine coaches, A-1 swimming and gymnastic equipment of the finest kind. Sports commissioner Atty.  Lemuel Astadan, the Dagupan sports think-tank which included Nanoy Duque, Jackal Vidal and Finnela Sim (executive director) literally went to feverish work and, thank God, made it.

Some sectors would downplay Dagupan City’s achievement, saying, it was a run-away winner. They won’t call it  “overall champion!”.  But that is all there is to it, fellas!  Dagupan is champ!

Congrats, Mayor Belen and your great staff!

We wish to congratulate G-Spot for releasing her book “G Spot: Essays and Poems on Pangasinan, Women, Environment and Celestial Encounters” originally published in the Sunday Punch. But we have yet to get our copy. We were informed about her book by someone who was holding a copy at the UP in Quezon City.

We heard there will be a book launch shortly.

We admire people who find the time to write a book, among them, Al Mendoza, Ate Mita Sison-Duque, Jun Velasco, Mel Velasco who just came out with a new book on (ho-hum! FVR again!), and others.  We are looking forward to Boss Ermin’s editorials and columns being bound in a book, too.

A President Duterte’s fan once told us to come out, too, with our columns on President Digong as subject.  The idea is still in gestation stage.

We wish G-Spot to give a blow-out after this plug.

Birthday greetings to former Rep. Gina De Venecia on February 15. Ditto with Ging Cardinoza.

They say that Aquarians are the sentimental type.  On the contrary, they tower in the intellectual realm; they are thinkers, rather than the feeling type of denizens.  In our case, we like JDV and CTD, we are Capricorns, who have the whole world in our hands.

Non-Dagupenos who have visited Tondaligan Beach are amazed at the imagination at work, which converted the once dingy place into a work of art.

If former Gov. now Cong. Spines and now son, Gov. Pogi, are getting praises for what they have done to the Lingayen Grounds including the beach area (you must factor here Cong. Pol Bataoil’s Lingayen Beach) do the same accolade to Mayor Belen Fernandez on Tondaligan! Ha?? What shall we do with Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s monument?

Actually, his memory should be the least of our worry. He has outlived his so-called heroism!

According to a Bonuan Beach witness during the Liberation, palpalaran kuno ira may American liberators, killing thousands of Bonuan natives and very few  Japanese remnants when they landed here.

Heroes ba ang tawag dyan? Pwe!!!
