Atchi Mita’s new baby, a reformed press club!

By Gonzalo Duque

WE start this column with a mixed emotion.

The family is in festive mood, with Sec. Pinkoy’s confirmation by Commission on Appointments.

It was not a walk in the park, mind you. There were dark forces at work. But you all know our brod, workaholic, honest to a fault.

Thank you, for your prayers!

Hmm. . .wait a minute, may isang mapanirang nagpapanggap na kaibigan.

We won’t dignify her dark darts. Maybe, the devil would be unmasked sooner or later. But it’s not in our system or style to hit back. The devil usually digs her own grave. Ano ba yan! Waste of ink ata ito a hmmp!

We have good news on the Duque front, yes, aside from the investiture of  our sister Luz D. Hammershind as LNU president and sister Nieva as chairperson; Cesar, Grace and Tina, trustees, and nephew Marko as trustee-EVP.

This columnist is chancellor.

Of special mention is our favorite sister in law, excellent writer, model mother and loving wife, now widow of our late brother Dr. Ado — publisher Mita Sison Duque.

Atchi Mita, aside from her intellectual writer persona is hyperkinetic manager of President Hotel in Lingayen, a big house named White House in Sta. Barbara town, rows of apartments in Quezon City and several properties in Pangasinan and Metro Manila.

One really wonders how the grand lady is able to run all these demanding responsibilities!

And amid all these awesome responsibilities, Atchi Mita is being pushed by the Pangasinan media to head the local press club to freshen up its healthy camaraderie and strengthen its elusive credibility.

We have had our stint in that lively and rambunctious group, amidst its kaleidoscopic character.

One thing our stint as president has succeeded to expunge was its “pitpit” image. Marami ang natuwa. We, therefore, ask our colleagues including our partner pp Orly Navarro to continue sustaining the shining image to advance media’s credibility in these parts.

As columnist – publisher of the Capitol Post, Atchi Mita shows erudition in her writings on subjects that used to be alien in local journalism. Being an author of books, the incoming president of the Pangasinan Media Association (PMA) will provide fresh leadership that will uplift not only the image but also the competence of local journalists.

We appeal to our colleagues to help our beloved Atchi Mita succeed as the new leader of the Pangasinan Media Association. Good luck and Godspeed!

Peace loving citizens should condemn the attempt on the life of our friend, Ashok Vasandani, a victim of shooting.

He survived the attack, which happened near his residence in Dagupan. What happened should alert the police to go after the criminal/s.

It will be recalled that a couple of years or so back, his nephew Raja was fatally shot in the same vicinity.

An outstanding civic leader, our Indian friend is super active in Rotary, media and religious circles.

We urge the local police to solve the attempted killing.

Ashok’s column in this paper is inspirational.

It is unthinkable and deplorable that his life would be the target of assassin or assassins.
