Learnings in Life

A lesson of kindness

By Dr. Ashok G. Vasandani

Here’s a story I read in a page in Facebook from “Beautiful Quotes”. I’d like to share, something we can all learn from.

A poor young man was selling goods door to door to pay his way through medical school.

At the end of the day he reached into his pockets, only to find a few crumpled dollar bills left.

He was hungry but couldn’t afford to go to a restaurant to eat. He decided to ask for a meal at the next house.

When he knocked, a young woman opened the door. Startled, he decided to ask for something to drink instead of some food.

She returned with a tall glass of milk and as the man sipped it, he asked “how much do I owe you?”

“Nothing” she said.

“It costs $0 to be a decent human being.”

The young man thanked her with a grateful hear and went on his way truly inspired.

Years later, the young woman became very ill and needed immediate surgery.

The Surgeon entered the room and stopped suddenly noticing the woman who helped him so much when he was a medical student.

From that moment on, he took great care in ensuring the success of her surgery.

When the bill was sent to the woman weeks later, she opened it to find a note

attached that read, “paid in full with one glass of milk.”

Don’t be afraid to show care for others. It can come back in unexpected ways.
