Jollibee V. Luna 4: “I love you Sabado, pati na rin Linggo!”

ON Sundays, I eat pancakes at Jollibee, especially when I have no time to cook, and rushing for an early morning brisk walk. While eating, the pipe-in jingle, “I Love You Sabado” blares, non-stop, overwhelming eardrums, that even after leaving the place, it inhabits a space in the mind.

This Sunday, I sat by the window eating my pancakes, drinking brewed coffee and doing the crossword. Something is different. I sat there for fifteen minutes, and there was quiet. There was no “I Love You Sabado”. Outside, very few vehicles were passing, and the guard was walking leisurely, without opening or closing the door. The sun is up, but the wind blew the clouds to cover it, casting a winter-like atmosphere. I could feel the wind blowing gently, an old man’s wig threatening to be swept away, and the skirt of a woman swaying, gently caressing a young boy’s face. Precious moments of life, inhabiting my consciousness.

Suddenly, “I love you Sabado, pati na rin Linggo!” blared again. Surprisingly, it did not bother me. Maybe because the sun peeped through, and warmed the kaimito tree in the adjacent lot, whose leaves danced, despite knowing its inevitable fate of being cut down to give way to another food chain.

An angel just passed by

There’s a deafening quiet at Jollibee V. Luna

the mouths have gone to church, to eat a little of the words of God

whose taste, can hardly be recalled, after not having eaten it,

for a long, long time.

 

for a while, the cashier stopped, counting money, that is not hers

and the guard is whistling, with the dancing

of the cool wind.
