Melon, melon sinta’

By Gonzalo Duque

INTERNATIONALLY known Mayor Belen Fernandez is doing it, nay, she has done it!

We are referring to the colorful, exciting, raging (despite the hot summer) Bangus Festival activities in the city.

Have you visited Tondaligan Ferdinand lately? Many misname this beautiful beach as Tondaligan Beach which would be redundant, some call it Tondaligan Bonuan. Mali, mali…

The late newsman Greg Alcaide, on the request of then Mayor Opring Manaois, coined a name that would mean a place for holding a party.  So tonda, which means, to stop, and liga, to feast. The name Ferdinand was in honor of Manaois’ idol.

Better visit the beach. And be impressed by its clean-ness and beauty, such as the row of colorful umbrella sheds (or shades?) in neat and orderly fashion.

Ok yong nagpangalan ng beauty pageant as Mistisang Bangus! Were you, Rex Catubig or Epi Rafanan, the one?

Anyway, let’s join Mayora drum up for Bangusan fest and draw the usual millions to Dagupan for the rest of April up to May 1.

By the way, a gentle advice to Mayora: huwag pansinin ang mga intriga; they will only divert your focus from the substantial. Better hire a spokesman to deal with the nitty gritty of nitpicking.

A piece of advice who tries to hit the boss, “Don’t fight City Hall!”

Over a round of beer, a local wit shared this story: Many great and would-be great men fell from the pedestal because of women. Btw, we are not alluding to anyone ha.

But the story of the great king David and Bathsheba is well known. That adulterous affair brought forth a king Solomon, mas maraming asawa and concubines! Paano niya kaya ayosin ang 1000 wives and 600 concubines?

You also know what happened to Samson and Delilah! Marcos and Imelda? Sabagay buhay pa si Imelda. Congressman pa! Sino pa ba?

Molly Reyes loves to entertain his friends with this story of a love-struck Chinaman.

When he was smooching his Filipina girlfriend, sighing hmmm… ”amoy melon”  but later “melon amoy,” he just hummed a familiar tune melon melon sinta.

We hope we enlivened your breakfast, mga makikilas na lalake!

President Digong has done it again! His recent trip to the Middle East resulted in bringing home $950-million in investments for the Philippines.

            Super salesman!

Not only that, he took along with him more than 160 undocumented OFWs mostly women who were maltreated by their Arabian employers.

Lesson learned: don’t send Filipina workers to the Middle East. They will (not all probably, but mostly) only be raped or abused.

Vice President Anthony Leung of the World Jaycees Inc. was feted in Dagupan at the Mint by local JCs led by Vice Mayor Brian Lim, who is World EVP, Dagupan chapter presidents BJ Vasandani of Bangus chapter and Jesus Duque of Dagupan Inc.

As former Dagupan JC Inc. president and JCP legal counsel, we remember with fondness the dynamic and super-active years of the organization which has produced great names in the movement the likes of former EVP Al Fernandez who was also former JC senate president; the late north Luzon VP Eddie Crisologo, voted Jaycee leader of the year; pp Dammy Magbual, pp Alex Villaflor, pp Manny Roy, the late Judge Gary Uson, former JCP president Benjie Lim, etc.. pp Molly Reyes, PRO of the oldie group led by pp Aster Fernandez, reports that former JCP PRO Jun Velasco wants Jayceeken renamed Jayceedon “to sustain the Jaycees’ sikat air.”

The Jayceekens in their meeting at Arbros talked about planting fire trees or Dama de Noche, Ylang Ylang or Rosal plants along the streets of the city leading to Lingayen.

Organization of the group was initiated by pp Oca Arcinue. In attendance, says Molly, were pp Eddie Biagtan, pp Efren Rosario, pp Cecil Balingit, pp Toti Sto. Domingo, Botong Aguinaldo, Paco Santos, senator Alvin Ochotorena.
