Sweet sorrow of goodbye

By Al S. Mendoza

AS there is always sorrow in parting, gladness likewise accompanies it.

To everything, almost, there is balance.  Yin yang.

And so it is that I said my sweet sorrow of goodbye yesterday to 2016.

There is sweetness in each passing year—the year past included.

There will always be that day of 2016, if not days or many, many days, that you wallowed in bliss, in heavenly ecstasy.

You are abnormal if you had not experienced joy in several of 2016’s 365 days.

No one is ever left unloved.

Even the poorest of the poor deserve gladness.

Who said the richest of the rich had not been visited by sadness, affliction?

They may have the wealth consisting, perhaps, of five lifetimes but that doesn’t mean they had a wrinkle-free 2016.

Yes, God is simply so very kind and generous to some but overall, he treats us all even Steven.

Good or bad you are, God will treat you fairly, justly.

Doesn’t the rain fall on both the weeds and the flowers?

Doesn’t the sun shine on both the wicked and the well-meaning?

He will never let us down all year round or he is not God at all.

Each one of us had moments worth remembering.

To the poor, maybe a pair of new shoes.

To the rich, maybe a new pair of counselors that champion the good deed of sharing.

If you had some slips in 2016, fret not.

Somehow, we all fall along the way; nobody’s perfect.

Sometimes, slips are necessary to help us build budding hopes, if not rebuild broken dreams.

Goes one of my favorite sayings: “It is not in the rising, but in the falling.”

I am not being religious but just trying to give a piece of my mind.

If I sound pontifical, sorry.

Not intentional.

If it disturbs you thoroughly, sorry.

But I won’t stop.  I’m no quitter.

If I feel it is right to do it, I’ll do it.

Hesitation is the mother of indecisiveness.

I am hopeful others, like Kuya Leonie Galvez from Los Angeles, might appreciate my ululations?

My optimism also emanates from another saying that I also love: “Even a fool has his share of good words to say.”

Today being the first day of 2017, let us be hopeful and not hateful, caring and not critical and loving and not living in sin.

We do not know what lies ahead.

But we do know that there is life to be lived.  Again.

And we must thank God for the grace.  Again.

And living for others has to be embraced.  Again.

So, as 2017 begins, let it be a reminder that we can start fresh, that loving should thrive as always.

Let us not waste the opportunity that God has given us, continues to give us, to help beautify the world.

Happy New Year!
