Beleaguered PhilCST and PAMMA

Jess Garcia

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

THE PRISAA regional meet was already finished but the PRISAA Metro-Dagupan tilt has yet to conclude its business due to unresolved technical problems that cropped during the elimination round involving Calasiao-based Philippine Colleges of Science and Technology (PhilCST) and the Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA).

According to my reliable source who requested anonymity, the two institutions will surely lose in default for fielding ineligible players during the qualifying round. A certified document that PhilCST submitted to PRISAA showed that Mabini, Pangasinan born Jhon Mel S. Mendoza was enrolled in this year’s PRISAA cagefest only on last September 29 when the tournament had already started on September 28. His commitment as a player is a violation of PRISAA rules. Similarly situated is PAMMA cager’s Mapandan-resident Tweneboah (I forgot his first name) who failed to submit his NSO-authenticated birth certificate, a clear infraction of PRISAA statutes. This forced his team to be booted out. My source concluded that the two teams were technically disqualified due to these violations.

I tried to contact the league’s commissioner Manny Gatchalian through his cellphone but failed to reach him.

So if, indeed, the two schools were disqualified, then the championship baton will go to Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) that landed fourth during the elims. (It is now mentored by veteran tactician Angel Gumarang and assisted by my first child Jazy and Wesley Espinosa. CdD will face the defending champion University of Luzon (under the tutelage of Byron Vidal) that topped the elims and the just concluded PRISAA Regional Meet held in Lingayen. The best-of-three finals I believe will be done next week.

This is the second time in-a-row that the talented PhilCST Topnotch cagers of PBA veterans Christian Calaguio, Jun Marzan and former UPang Flames tutor Jay Ronquillo failed to play the championship match. The first was this year’s UCAAP tourney. After PhilCST passed the semifinal round landing second suddenly withdrew from the title match against the defending champions Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, claiming poor and biased officiating by the referees. (Note, however, that PhilCST did not complain against the ‘whistle blowers’ during the PRISAA games.

Some say PhilCST’s exclusion in the PRISAA games was a karma for their sudden and unceremonious withdrawal from the UCAAP championship game. I just shrugged that off and decided to let things be till the next season. I hope this fiasco will not be fiasco will not be repeated.. Siya nawa.
