It’s graduation time

“THERE’S a trick to the ‘graceful exit.’ It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, a life stage, or a relationship is over- and let it go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance to our lives. It involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, that we are moving up, rather than out.”

I have been writing this column, for this The PUNCH since 2012. Looking back, I would say it was more of destiny’s work that got me here. Despite my communication degree-major in journalism, it was never a plan on my side to pursue a “writing career” and work in the media industry. But then things unfolded the way they did and I never like to change any of it.

My first job right after graduation was at an international books/magazines-distributor company in Manila. I was a marketing assistant. The job was generally okay but for some personal reasons, I decided to come home and try working in my beloved Pangasinan. I expected that finding a job in the province would be tough. While I completed my journalism internship at The Punch, I was still surprised and thankful that they had been very welcoming to hire me as one of their correspondents and columnists way back August 2012.

News, features, column articles and there’s this sense of having another family.

This is basically what Sunday Punch has been for me…and the rest is history, as they say.

However, in a few weeks time I’ll be writing my last article here. I will be doing a ‘graceful exit’ to enable me to make an entry to another challenge in my life. And I will not allow myself to get past this stage without expressing how grateful I am to the very first company and employer who trusted me with no questions asked. As I have told Sir Ermin, it is, indeed, with deep regret that I must give up the privilege given me to feed the desires of journalistic side. I had not really planned on being a journalist but I’m more than glad to have been given that chance. And I thank him for all the learnings.

Also, my sincerest gratitude to everyone in the Sunday Punch!

But anyway, ‘tis not the time to cry. I still have to share my stories in the weeks ahead!
