LNU for all parties policy
Gonz-Duque1

By Gonzalo Duque

PLEASE don’t make a mistake about it.

We at Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) are on open zone in politics…

Our doors are open to all sides of the political spectrum, to all contrasting personalities.

It may be true that we are supporting the presidential bid of Mayor Rody Duterte, but that is on a personal basis.

As to our school, Lyceum kuan yo pa? we stand four square for all political issues… fairly.

We stand on democratic ground.

We have played host to Sec. Mar Roxas, Mayor Duterte, and on August 26, Senator Grace Poe.

Our goal is to inform, to educate, to open minds, to debate, to discuss. Anytime, Joel Villanueva may visit or Senator Bongbong Marcos. As we said, our doors are open to all schools of thought.

We support the liberal arts… the objective is to promote broadmindedness… so that our people can decide more responsibly, more intelligently after listening to the pro and con of an issue—all angles, if possible. This policy, by the way, was started by LNU founder, the late Dr. Paco Duque.

Those interested—the politicians—who want to avail themselves of this privilege—are advised to inform management in advance, say one or two days.

We discourage the ”bara bara” approach, yong basta basta na lang susulpot, causing distractions on ongoing classes sessions.

Ok? Up with the academic freedom!

We wrote this while packing up for Davao City to attend its Kidayawan festival, with son Nicoy and his girlfriend as guests of Mayor Rody. The week-long celebration actually began on August 15 and ends on August 23.

It is meant to thank the Lord for the blessings He has given the place especially its famous fruits—Durian, Mangosteen, Pomelo, Pineapple, Lanzones, Banana, etc.

Davao is so gifted with a unique soil and weather that cough up oh-so-delicious fruits, the tastiest in the world! Well, just like our unique fishing grounds in Dagupan which produce the tastiest bangus!

We’d then be in Davao for three days under the hospitality of the next president of the Philippines, Mayor Duterte!

Oh, yes, columnist Al Mendoza did an interesting article on the presidentiables last week.

He said two stood out as most preferred—Alan Cayetano and Rody Duterte. Intelligence, “action oriented leaders” top the qualities of his choices.

Al said “your preference defines who you are.”

Bullseye!

A lot of people reacted to our suggestion that Mayor Belen and Vice Mayor Brian forge a team in the coming elections to carry on progress.

Mairap so pulitika, baka ‘di niyo alam? Divisive, bruising and sometimes hateful, and even violent. Look at what’s going on in the provincial level!

Marami ang agreed on the two B’s (Belen and Brian) idea, may mga ayaw din.

The proposed tandem brings to mind the political fate of Councilor Alfie Fernandez who is also “ripe” to go higher.

We thought pwede pa siyang mag-antay, bata at pogi pa naman din. He might do an Opring Manaois strategy. Nang natalo sa laban nila ni Mayor Libring Reyna, nag BIR muna.

Then he came home and ran for mayor at nakalaban niya si Vice Mayor Felipe Ll. Cuison. He, Manaois, won.

We are not saying mag-BIR muna si Alfie. Maybe, mag-judge muna, kasi lawyer siya e.

Kailangan ang perfect timing e. And, of course, lots of moolah!

Sabi ng isang local sage, you need in order to win “peso-nality,” “car-acter,” and “bank-ground!

If you have those, walang talo.

And also, if we may add, performance.
