Ghost streets today

STUDENT drivers or those who are learning to drive can safely use the streets today.

It’s Mayweather and Pacquiao megafight day, you know.

Who are you rooting for? Our mind says Mayweather, while our heart goes all the way for PK (Pambansang Kamao).

All the way? Manny’s story is legend. And he, from the looks of it, is a good man. He is a preacher of the Lord.

Our first boxing hero, Muhammad Ali, is rooting for Manny. PK, without a doubt, is today the most popular Filipino. His is an inspiring story for the young especially those mired in poverty. His story says don’t just sit there even if you were born to poor parents. Go for your star, go for your birthright, go for the gold.

You can make it. You can be like Manny.

But don’t forget your moorings, don’t forget Jesus, don’t forget your origin, your parents.

Meantime, let’s watch this Pinoy legend show once more what a Filipino without material wealth at birth can do to reach the highest peak.

Don’t forget to re-arm yourself with a granite faith that a Pinoy can reach the top of the world, like how Manny Pacquiao did!

If you are not a congressman who can watch it at ringside to the tune of P1-million bucks, just join your family or friends watch it on TV, this defining moment for a Filipino.

We are watching it at Music Warehouse with balikbayans Jess Garcia and Tessie De Guzman. Ray Gloria, MW Manager, is boasting Music Warehouse’s biggest screen.

See you.

Our heart sank when Mary Jane Veloso (Mary Jane, un-providentially, is another name for marijuana, right?) was convicted for being a courier of the prohibited drug. She was scheduled to be put to death, by firing squad, along with other 5 drug convicts in that predominantly Muslim country.

But the order for her killing was stayed largely due to President Aquino’s plea to Indonesian President Jojo Widodo.

Praise God!

This Mary Jane incident should teach us a lesson. Be careful in dealing with job recruiters.

If true that Mary Jane didn’t know some satanic hands put the drug article in her bag, she was still to blame for being careless.

Let’s hope and pray her reprieve will lead investigators to the truth, and set her free if found innocent!

As a time-honored axiom says, it’s better to send a guilty man free than convict an innocent.

Last Saturday, we tried to see Gen. Gani Nerez, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) director, at Pedritos for his scheduled meeting with Pangasinan Muslims.

Failing to arrive due to an unscheduled appointment, the former Pangasinan provincial director is chief adviser of the Pangasinan Muslims who fully cooperated with him during his two and a half stint in the province. We’ve asked successor, Prov’l Director Rey Biay and Chris Abrahano, Dagupan police chief, to follow what Gani started in the drugs fight via the Muslims’ cooperation.

Because of his absence, we were made to sit at the presidential table and besieged with questions on what we know about the ongoing negotiations between the province and the second congressional district, and the donors (the Angeles brothers, Albert and Oscar, descendants of the late Ambrosio Padilla) on a precious real estate property earmarked for housing and a memorial park for the Muslims.

It was a chance of a lifetime to swap views with the Muslims. We saw streaks of goodness in them, lending hope for the success of the ongoing proposed Bangsa Moro region talks.

Congratulate our friend Guia Macmod, a former MILF commander, for his election as president of the Pangasinan Integrated Muslims Assembly, Inc. (PIMA).

Gani Nerez was the founder and main adviser of PIMA, along with Governor Spines and Congressman Pol Bataoil.

Our reaction to the Nepal tragedy? Up to now we are in utter state of mourning for the deaths of thousands from the mega-quake.

Don’t misquote us. But the Climate Change phenomenon has pushed us closer to the verge of disaster, too. The country and this province and especially, Dagupan is listed by the U.N. as sitting on perilous grounds due to climate change or global warming.

Keep tab of the PARMC’s disaster preparedness kit, created by Mayor Belen Fernandez. It’s our first defense against nature’s horrific fury.

Remembrances and Warm greetings: Ed Maramba, president of Philippine Association of Fish Producers, Inc., on his 60th birthday on May 20 ditto to our late father Pio on May 5. Former Gov. Raffy Colet on April 28. And the much-celebrated graduation of our cousin Jesus ‘Jing’ Martinez at Jecks Pavillion on May 20. His high school classmate, the former Erna Fernandez, is in town to join the party.
