Mayweather runs again

Jess Garcia

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

TWO weeks had already passed and the PacMay (Pacquiao-Mayweather) brouhaha over the colossal battle has died down. From barbers to jeepney and tricycle drivers that I had talked to, they still insist that our boxing icon clearly won the fight. Everyone said something went wrong in the scoring of the three judges, suspecting that the Mafia in Las Vegas had a hand in it. And, I share the same sentiment. In my score card, it was 114-113 for Pacman, or at least a draw, at the very least.

Panalo si Pacquiao, na-Mafia yong laban” said Engr. Rodolfo “Boy” Dion during mybreakfast with him at Dagupena Restaurant. “Nasira ang boxing dahil sa ginawa ni Mayweather. Sigurado ako na bababa na ang image ng world boxing dahil sa ginawa ni Mayweather,” said Rolly Dioquino of Calasiao.

Two days after that fight, Mayweather offered Pacman a rematch possibly to be held next year to give Pacman enough time to recuperate anent his injured right shoulder. Pacman was elated and quickly accepted the offer. Obviously, he wants revenge. But two days after Mayweather offered it, Money (Mayweather’s nickname) recanted. He said there will be no second meeting at all because Pacman is a ‘sore’ loser and has no chance at all to win the battle. His recantation did not really surprise me. He has a habit of changing his mind each time. Or perhaps somebody told him that a second fight is no longer bankable anymore because of what happened. Of course, if the rematch pushes through, Money will surely ask for even bigger of money for himself. He is not “Money” if he’s not greedy. Or perhaps a big name in his camp had whispered to him that a one hundred percent Pacman is really unbeatable and his dream to equal or break the record of Rocky Marciano (49-0) will not be realized.

Pacman is back in town and is being received warmly by fans. With his right arm supported by a black sling, he reiterated that he won the fight by slim margin (7-5) after reviewing the match in video, validating our perception that he truly won the contest.

While he also said he’s also mulling retirement, many believe he will run for senator next year, his first step to presidency in 2022. (In my opinion, he would be better off running for governor in his province so he can serve his constituents better whom he loves very much).

He said he’s amenable to a rematch if given the chance by Money but Mayweather is running away from him again. He did during the negotiations five years ago and again inside the ring. Perhaps it’s another ploy by Money to make the rematch controversial and eventually bankable. But I think only few will buy that ruse this time since boxing fans are fed up with Money’s antic.

My deep sympathy to the family of media colleague Rannie Manaois. May he rest in peace.
