Pacquiao vs Mayweather rematch?

Jess Garcia

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

THE first question I was asked by my relatives who met me at NAIA upon my return here in the Philippines on April 24 was how the Americans regard our boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in his coming welterweight unification fight (WBC, WBA, WBO) against the colorful American boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. I told them oddsmakers in Las Vegas favor Mayweather 2-1 to win the mega-buck showdown. But I told also them that outside Las Vegas is a different story.

The Yankees are divided in their thoughts. Of course, as expected, majority of the black people root for Mayweather and even predicted a knockout victory for their ‘brother’. But to my surprise, many of the Caucasians especially the Mexicans-Americans pick Pacman to win at least by decision, while still others predict a series of rematches, at least two or three times.

They believe that the undefeated and versatile Mayweather (47-0) will surely not fight toe-to-toe but instead dance and backpedal to avoid the barrage of punches of the Filipino pride like he usually did in all of his previous fights, especially his last against Marcus Maidana.

In fact, world celebrities like former U.S. president Bill Clinton, actor Sylvester Stallone of the famed movies “Rocky” and “Rambo,” Mexican ex-world champions Oscar de la Hoya Erik Morales, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jorge Arce and even Muhammad Ali, NBA’s Kobe Bryant, to name some, choose Pacman to prevail in the match. Juan Manuel Marquez said in his heart he wants Pacquiao to win but he thinks Mayweather will win. I describe Marquez’s thoughts iwas-pusoy ‘ika nga.

It’s only Pacman’s Mexican nemesis Marco Antonio Barrera positively picking Mayweather to win. Except Barrera, all of them said there will be a rematch if the verdict is split or a majority decision. I agree. But if it turns out a unanimous (lopsided) decision, I don’t think so. But if no knockout happens, I believe there will be a rematch, maybe after six months.

Yes, money-making is in the offing. All the Filipinos that I’ve talked to from Texas to California were confident that Pacman would win by knockout or by decision. But I told them maybe by decision, and that’s if no unseen hands (Mafia) will be involved. I explained that Money’s talent is more in technique and fight generalship than athletic while Pacman’s aces are his explosive speed, footwork and power. He’s fast and fluid and I believe Pacman got the better stamina than Money, and that will count a lot.

Like JunV, being a Filipino and patriotic persons, win or lose we’ll go for Pacquiao. For sure JunV and I will be drunk on Sunday at Trish Hotel and Restaurant in my town Mangaldan. Hindi ba Jun? Sabi nya blowout ko raw siya being a balikbayan, a Filipino tradition. Okey lang.

The Dagupan City Cycling Club (DCCC) which is sponsoring numerous cycling road races in the province is not only for the development of our local cyclists but also conducts civic projects including its upcoming blood-letting and physical/medical mission to be held on May 9. DCCC’s new president Jojo Ramos said the occasion will be held at Dagupan City’s Red Cross office starting at 3:00 p.m. and all DCCC members will donate blood.

Ramos succeeded Ricky Diocares after the latter suffered a fatal stroke on March 15 in Alaminos City. Ramos said the First Ricky Diocares Duathlon Open Challenge will be held in July. Details will be printed here in succeeding issues. My heartfelt kudos to you guys and keep up the good work.
