Life is short

“By justice, a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down” – Proverbs 29:4

FLASH! A dear friend, Dr. Tessie Flores-de Venecia, one of the closest relatives and confidantes of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. and Congresswoman Gina de Venecia succumbed to cancer. She was 64.

It seemed like yesterday when she teased us about our successful retina detachment healing by her ophthalmologist son Dr. Bel, head of Region 1 Medical Center’s Eye Department.

She has joined husband, Braulio de Venecia Jr., who had gone ahead to God’s kingdom.

For weeks now, Dr. Cathy has been in constant touch with her to manage her diet. Much to our desire to join Cathy’s regular visit at her residence in San Fabian, we just expressed thru Cathy our sincerest prayers for her.

Let’s pray for her soul.

We joined Thursday a media team led by Net 25’s Glenn Tiempo and Bombo Radyo’s Buds Agtalao for an ocular inspection of the fish pens-checkered rivers of Dagupan City.

The 2-hour motorboat round of at least 10 barangays was more than enough to spill the unvarnished truth — illegal fishing methods especially fish pens are back or probably never left the scene. Just to highlight a point, it’s difficult to navigate the waterway between Calmay and Carael due to the fishpens’ blockade.

Fish pens in barangay Salapingao could qualify a Guinness Book inclusion with a caption Fish pens Galore!

We believe Mayor Belen T. Fernandez who is being fed the wrong information about the status of these illegal fishing contraptions should crack the whip where it should.

We thought Dagupan being known worldwide as Bangus Country or Home of the Tastiest Bangus would rise to heights of glory for its Number One natural wealth – bangus-rich rivers. Yet there are intimations this very source of life, could disappear due to suffocation or obfuscation.

Our interest was caught by the death of Philippine movies former heartthrob Liezle Martinez, lovely daughter of superstars Amalia Fuentes and Romeo Vasquez, and wife of our “cousin” Albert Martinez.

She was 47.

During our teen years, who wouldn’t know Romeo Vasquez and Amalia Fuentes?

Liezle’s mother said “I always wondered why it seemed Liezle’s life was moving very quickly.

She got married in her teens and had one child after another. It was as if she was constantly in a hurry. Perhaps it was because her life would be short.”

In 2008 when we were editor of Bagumbayan, official organ of the Knights of Rizal (former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. was our supreme commander), we were trying to track Albert Martinez’s whereabouts for a one-on-one having brilliantly portrayed the national hero in the movie “Dapitan.”

May Liezle’s soul rest in peace!

While rummaging for some materials on women in light of Women’s Month, we stumbled on our file a nice poem “Little Eyes Upon You.”

We remembered the role of women, considered by publisher Ermin as the stronger sex, for their magical power in family upkeep and rearing. And what could be the center of their influence than the upbringing of children! Below is an immortal poem, written by a mother, addressed to us, adults.

Little Eyes Upon You

There are little eyes upon you

and they’re watching night and day.

There are little ears that quickly

take in every word you say.

There are little hands all eager

to do anything you do;

And a little boy who’s dreaming

of the day he’ll be like you.

You’re the little fellow’s idol,

you’re the wisest of the wise.

In his little mind about you

no suspicions ever rise.

He believes in you devoutly,

holds all you say and do;

He will say and do, in your way

when he’s grown up just like you.

There’s a wide-eyed little fellow

who believes you’re always right;

and his eyes are always opened,

and he watches day and night.

You are setting an example

every day in all you do;

For the little boy who’s waiting

to grow up to be just like you.
