Jaycees and fisherfolk leaders cited

“Give man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime,” Confucius

THE Jaycees’ golden days come back to mind with the election of Vice Mayor Brian Lim of Dagupan “Bangus” Jaycees, Inc., as JCI president for 2015.

His father, former Mayor Benjie Lim, was JCI president in 1990.

This glorious moment should lift the spirit of the family, following BSL’s defeat to Mayor Belen Fernandez and the near-fatal stroke that has immobilized him for some time now.

Brian’s ascent to the national leadership of the organization hurdled a rough road littered with “land mines.” It was tough war he won by 40 votes against closest rival, a hold-your breath!—Dagupena, lawyer Weng de Vera who belongs to the Dagupan JCs’ Inc. camp of Sanggunian Panlungsod secretary Ryan Ravanzo, past JCI president.

In the spirit of the Jaycee tenet “the human personality is the greatest work of God,” we advise the Jaycee leaders to submerge their minuscule war for the higher interest.

We suggest Brian to clean up his new stable before launching his program and vision for a great Philippine Jaycees.

It’s interesting to note that Brian and Ryan are office mates in the Dagupan Sanggunian. Well, they are able to work in harmony because of their Jaycee training.

When we were editor of The Leader, JCI’s national publication, in 1980, we elaborated on the principle that leadership is the ability to relegate the personal or private interest to the larger interest.

We were also the spokesman of then JCI president Chichos Luciano who became JCI World president later.

Some local Jaycee leaders who were inthe national roster were former Mayor Al Fernandez, past vice president for Asia, and now incoming Jaycee Senate president; the late Eddie Crisologo, former vice president for Northern Luzon; Beep Beep Tan, former vice president for Northern Luzon; former national legal counsel Gonzalo Duque, national parliamentarian the late Gary Uson, former sec-general, the late Larry Cabuang, and others.

In the real “bangus world,” we should salute a BonuanBoquig bangus raiser, Ed Maramba—president of the Fishpond Owners Operators of Dagupan City Ass’n (Foofadci)—for his election last week as president of the National Federation of Fish Growers of the Philippines in an organizational meeting in Makati.

Ed, along with sturdy souls of the industry, Alfredo Dawana (founder of Foofadci), Ramon Santillan, Alfredo Caguioa, ABC president Lino Fernandez, and others, has been on the forefront of the Dagupan bangus industry in the private sector. The group’s zealous crusade against illegal fishpens sometimes stepped on the toes of City Agriculturist Emma Molina requiring Mayor Belen’s “mother hen” intervention.

Maramba’s leap into the national scene should sharpen Dagupan’s attention on the industry described as ailing despite the city’s label as “Bangus Center of the World.”

Maybe the core isn’t doing much enough in step with our Guinness’ Record Award—thanks to BSL’s marketing savvy. Guinness, our reputation as bangus king of the world and Ed Maramba’s election will make an ideal mix to bring out the best of Bangus City.

We suggest President Ed and Mayor Belen meet asap and plot their next moves.

Why is Pangasinan’s image as a peaceful province getting a black eye? We ask this in reaction to the VACC’s tag slamming the province’s peace and order report card.

Our friend, Raffy Baraan, provincial administrator, and Atty. Geraldine Baniqued, have castigated the Department of Interior and Local Government for skirting the law on the designation of a provincial police director.

The law since 2012 is being violated here for not allowing the Governor to select a director from a field of 3 (three) recommendees.

This snub, say the duo, has cost lives and blackened our record as a peaceful province.

Cong. Pol Bataoil who Mark Cojuangco says “is the only Pangasinan Congressman not on my side” for governor, showed his cha cha dancing skills (with partner Minda) at the 95th birthday bash of the late former Justice and Vice Governor Porfy Sison at the family’s Lingayen residence last Sept. 7.

BTW, Kuya Porfy used to send us postcards whenever he was overseas. Has high tech, the internet, killed the postcard?

NOTES: Birthday greetings, too, to Pangsinan Achiever Vicky Siapno-Tada on Sept. 12, Sister Susan V. Tuaño, September 10, and Cresing dela Torre, mother of Atty. Paeng dela Torre, Sept. 13, and Dr. Cathy Velasco, Sept. 16!!!

Balikbayan Engr. Fred Joves, a former Landoil executive and classmate of art connoisseur Didong Siapno in grade and high school, is in town….

A McDo coffee club is asking Councilor Jig Seen, a past JC Inc. prexy, to file a resolution to honor Dagupan personalities who have contributed to the arts and culture. It’s about time!
