THE MISSING MAYOR. Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste, his vice mayor and city councilors were nowhere in sight when Gov. Amado Espino Jr. went Tuesday to the Western Pangasinan District Hospital in that city for the inauguration of its new administration building.

Celeste was reportedly in Metro Manila for a prior commitment.

Truth or coincidence?

Could it be that the mayor is not yet ready to face the governor again after he and the rest of the eight mayors in first district earlier pledged their love and commitment to former Congressman Mark Cojuangco’s gubernatorial plan in 2016?

Or he simply didn’t want to spoil GATE’s mood, like former lovers purposely evading to cross each other’s path when wounds have not yet completely healed after a bitter separation?

But GATE was ecstatic that day with a troop of barangay captains whom he calls as his BFFs (best friends forever) in attendance to show support.

Expect more of these encounters in future gatherings brought about by the scent of politics 2016 in Pangasinan atmosphere.—Tita Roces

STAKEHOLDERS MEETING ON TREE CUTTING. – Recent developments in the “to-cut-or-not-to-cut” issue of remaining trees along the Manila North Road (MNR) is encouraging. I’m talking about the conduct of the multi-agency consultation meeting on the issue a few days ago.
Yes, there was already that provincial resolution approved but there is nothing better than to see concerned sectors sitting together, really talking, and discussing win-win solutions. There were three items that they agreed on that will henceforth guide their respective groups actions on what should and should not be done. To sum up, they agreed that no tree shall be cut (and removed), unless an independent expert claims that the tree has no chance of surviving.
I just wondered why that meeting of all these stakeholders did not take place sooner, way before the cutting of over a thousand trees last February. But anyway, good job to all the involved parties! May you all be guided accordingly by what you’ve just signed. – Johanne Margarette R. Macob

THE RPOC MEETING – After all, the saleslady was right when she suggested an intensified police visibility including setting up checkpoints and others. My prayers go to the members of the Regional Peace and Order Council especially to chairman Mayor Belen Fernandez with the hope that the agreed strategy will be translated into action as soon as possible. Good luck! – Hilda Martin Austria
