WANTED: HRO. THE province not only needs just a Human Resource and Development Officer (HRDO) of the provincial government but most importantly, as human relations officer.

This was the firm order, not a request, made by Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr, prior to the provincial board’s almost aborted confirmation of  Janette Asis by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members on July 21 as the provincial government’s HRDO.

Ms. Asis, who is often poker-faced, seldom allows media interviews, exudes a very expensive smile and looks at herself as a royalty, was about to face tough grilling in the board had it not been for Administrator Raffy Baraan’s intervention who came to her rescue.

In what could have been a humiliating scolding (for her bad work attitude and inhuman relations) before her staff who came in full force to provide her moral support, and some other department heads, the pouting Ms. Asis was luckily accorded a closed-door face-off inside the office of Vice Gov. Ferdie Calimlim.

The pissed off bokals, who had been receiving barrage of complaints about Ms. Asis’ alleged arrogance, would have had their day of vengeance had it not for Mr Baraan who dutifully served as her knight in shining armor. In the end   the honourable board members simply gave their nod, albeit with a heavy heart, after confronting Her Majesty Janette for almost two hours.

Now that she officially wears the badge as HRDO, will she change for the better? Or worse? Abangan!Tita Roces

LINGAYEN NEW WET MARKET & SLAUGHTERHOUSE. As the province’s capital town, I think Lingayen has been left behind by other towns in the past years in most sectors that matter, with needed changes not being implemented, not until now. As a native of Lingayen, I am really looking forward to the opening of these two new structures. I hope these will work out well and will boost the town’s economy not undermining waste management. I also pray that my fellows who will be badly affected by the new policies would give in for the greater good and that the municipal government will eventually find an appropriate scheme, if not locations, for their livelihood activities. Way to go, beloved town! – Johanne M. Macob

THE TASK FORCE ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (TFYD): Being a former chairman of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), I was relieved to know that there are still youth leaders representing and hopefully functioning for the welfare of the young people in the absence of the SK. Although the campaign against illegal drugs have long been part of the constitution and by-laws of the SK, the real scenario of the illegal drug abuse problem at present is far more challenging and really difficult as the youths especially the minors have become involved or victims (is more appropriate) of this monstrous trade. The war against illegal drugs then is a battle to be fought by courageous, intelligent, idealistic yet realistic and passionate young leaders for the sake of their fellow young people. Thus, the “BIMPUs” (mga Batang Inilukluk ng Magulang sa Puwesto, acronym that originated from Comelec, if I recall it right) should think twice before joining the task force.- Hilda M. Austria

EARLY POLITICKING. I am not sure if the saying, “the early bird catches the worm” works in the realm of politics, as well… since some of our local leaders have already decided to make public and official their political disposition, almost two years before the next election. I don’t mean to re-echo the Governor’s remark, but really, I hope work still tops the priorities of these local leaders, whose respective terms of office, by the way, haven’t even reached halfway.- Johanne M. THE FLOOD DRILL. The condition of the residents in Barangay Talibaew grieves me, having to deal with flood almost all year round. Flood drills along with other drills have proven to be somewhat effective in times of disasters. However, in the absence of a considered disaster, there is living in a flood-prone community like Talibaew that deserves more than a drill as they (residents) risk their health, their properties, their normal way of life in order to adapt to this decade old problem. Come on! Try to be in their shoes, I’m sure you’ll also beg for solution, a real one! – Hilda M. Austria
