Danger of ‘Daang Matuwid’ cited

LAS VEGAS, Nevada—We arrived here filled with anxiety on what’s happening in our country.

The PDAF and DAP national scandals have brought great shame to our country, even if our beleaguered President P-noy Aquino is crazy over his ambitious program Daang Matuwid.

It is a well-known fact that such a tall order is not only difficult to achieve; it is full of risk and danger because it could boomerang and hurt the very person initiating such a noble and commendable objective.

As we all know now, the noble objective has somewhat boomerang.

The President who, we all agree, meant well is now receiving brickbats.

Usap-usapan din dito yan. Nakakahiya but Pinoys are biting their nails, trying hard to learn to live with it.

Sana may magandang mangyayari in the next few days sa ating bansa. Or else—what?

Pray that may pupuntahan ang ating laban sa mga corrupt.

We agree with P-noy that walang mahirap kung walang korap. Ito ang tinatawag na lindol at tsunami na mahirap mapahinto but it is a good, commendable and noble advocacy launched by no less than by our President.

All of us should support this mantra. Sana hindi mag alinlangan at mag agam-agam ang mga lider ng ating sambayanan sa advocacy ng ating mahal na Pangulo.

Kaya lang, sana he would do something about the case of Butch Abad, budget secretary, and alleged mentor of Janet Lim-Napoles, para matahimik na ang civil society.

Happy coincidence. We and Mayor Belen Fernandez saw each other at the airport. Small world?

She was bound for Los Angeles, while we, for San Francisco.

Here in Las Vegas, we were received warmly by Dagupeños Dr. Winnie Fernandez, Aurelio Reyes and his wife Joy and still Miss Vicky Lozano, former beauty queen.

Panay at marami ang tanong nila on Dagupan, but anyway, Dr. Winnie who just planed in too helped us talk about our locals over there to news-starved Dagupeños in the U.S.

Nabanggit din sa usap usapan ang preparasyon ng ciudad sa kinatatakutan na lindol at tsunami which according to our friend Prof. Nick Melecio, would strike and bring untold havoc and deaths to our beloved Dagupan City.

As this column has repeatedly pointed out, we Dagupeños are lucky because we have a caring Mayor Belen Fernandez who has organized a task force, Public Alert Response Management Council (PARMC) as a proactive response to the feared disaster.

It is strange that other mayors in Central Pangasinan and located in the coastal areas are taking the warnings on disasters lightly.

We should be happy that we have disasters drills in our schools in Dagupan and some Central Pangasinan town.

In compliance to the program of Mayor Belen, we are readying our buildings including the high-rise Le Duc Hotel for evacuees.

We hope that other LGU’s will be as ardent as Mayor Belen in disaster preparedness.

If they happen to read this, they should not waste a minute to get into the big picture.

Seryosong concern ito, mga igan. Don’t say we did not warn you pag nagkataon.

Maging maingat sana tayo lagi.
