It’s planting season!

JUNE marks a lot of milestones — in our country, in our city, in our lives. It was during this month when we, as a nation, gained independence from the Spanish colonizers. At the local level, it is during this month that the city of Dagupan celebrates its “day”.

On a more personal note, my father was born on a day in June. The father of our province, Gov. Amado Espino Jr., and our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, are also June-born. Incidentally, all the fathers in the world are remembered and celebrated in June.

But beyond all the abovementioned notable dates, what makes the month June more special is the fact that it kicks off planting season in the country.

Early this month, pupils and students have resumed their daily trips to their schools. They are again back to their journey of learning in order to secure a more meaningful future. They have started ‘planting’ for  their dreams. In the same vein, just a few days ago, the provincial government led by Gov. Espino helped students – specifically of the lone college in Anda town – “plant” for their dreams for a better tomorrow. I wish all these seeds of dreams for the future would grow soon to bear fruits.

For our beloved farmers, the sixth month begins their wet cropping season. Seeds are now being sown, along with the hope for a good harvest. I believe, together with these seeds are the farmers’ dreams for their families, especially for their children — the dream for their kids to be more successful than them, in all the aspects that matter.

I was told by Ma’am Dolly Moya, the OIC provincial agriculturalist, that this month it is a good time to plant not only rice seeds but also tree seedlings. No wonder her office has been busy distributing not only palay seeds but fruit-bearing tree seedlings to different organizations in the province. Of course, this advocacy supports l to the celebration of the “World Environment Month” as well.

June, indeed, launches the planting season.

However, recently, I have learned of this new rice variety called the green super rice  being further developed, specifically in the province. It is the kind that is said to be ‘green’ for being environment-friendly and ‘super’ for having the capacity to withstand the toughest growing conditions such as drought, flood, salty water, and even pests. If it gets fully implemented in the province, the green super rice gives our farmers, the opportunity to earn more, to plant for more dreams

Hooray for the month of June! Let us all plant!
