Love heals

I JUST came across a passage that says a man can love his girlfriend for one month, his wife for a year or so, but his mother forever. I believe the first two claims are both contentious (and yes, relative) but the last one is just irrefutable. Indeed, a man can and will love his mother forever more. I know that the province’s top leader will agree with me on this one.

Sharing a moment shared with the province’s “First Mother” (I’m not really if there is such a title) affirmed that claim. By the way, let me share a good news. Madame Victoriana, the 92-year-old mother of Governor Amado Espino Jr. is now doing well, after suffering a stroke and being comatose for months. She is now able to get up, smile, and communicate with people. Her recovery has been unexpectedly excellent.

When asked what made such a ‘miracle’ possible, the family and a medical doctor credited the love, care, and support from the family, especially from the children. Nanay Victoriana must have felt that she is very much loved by her children.

Beyond the financial means and the medical support — it’s the love and genuine care that play the biggest role in the recovery of anyone under the weather. When the physiological part fails, it’s the emotional part, it’s the faith that subsists. Faith goes a long way. And yes, love heals.

The likelihood of Madame Victoriana’s favorite grandson and the governor’s son and namesake, Board Member Amado ‘Pogi’ Espino III, succeeding his father as the chief executive of the province come year 2016 could have also been one of the factors for her fast recovery. She gave a slight nod to her beloved apo’s planned candidacy.

Madame Victoriana, the ever-concerned mother that she is, suffered a stroke due to severe mental stress upon hearing unfounded accusations against her son — the governor — during the campaign period approaching May 2013 elections. Conversely, the numerous good news and awards citing her governor-son’s leadership, could have lent to her early recovery as well.

Madame Victoriana was so affected in the same way that her son had been sick worried about her. At the hospital, I learned that the Governor, along with the rest of the family, tried his best to stay as frequent as possible by his mother’s side. I recall when we, in the media once casually asked for the whereabouts of the Governor, we were told that he was in Manila to visit her mother at the hospital. I cannot but commend our Governor for unceasingly serving the province well while being the good, if not the best, son he could be. This was the case with him throughout her mother’s recovery stage.

I wish and I pray for her continuous improvement in her recovery. Our brief interaction told me I met one of the noblest mothers I can find. It was such an honor meeting you, Madame Victoriana!

To those who are beginning to lose hope on their loved-one’s recuperation from any illness, remember that when all else fails, love heals.
